Global Warming has been rising at a new higher level. The impact on evironment is so devastating that drastic actions need to be taken immediately. Organizations such as WWF has raised concerns about global warming by organizing an annual event called The Earth Hour to raise awareness that all of us must take actions to prevent more damage to earth.

From time to time, global warming has become a major issue for people and the environment. It occurs when greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane which usually come from burning fossil fuels, deforestation and usage of certain chemicals, trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, causing the temperature to increase and creating greenhouse effect.

Earth Hour is an annual global event which was first organized by WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and Sydney Morning Herald starting in 2007. This event is held annually on every last Saturday of march, where every households and businesses and buildings in all over the world are asked to turn off any non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour.

In July 2010, the state owned electrical power company PT. Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has decided to raise basic power tariff up to 15%. This is due to the increasing demand in power consumption in the past 5 years. The increase in power consumption has caused problems to PLN in coping with the people’s demand for electricity. In many parts of Indonesia, blackouts happen on daily basis or periodically in order to fulfill the needs of electricity which has outspaced supply.
