Are CFL Bulbs Better Than LED Bulbs?

Are CFL Bulbs Better Than LED Bulbs? The push towards "Green" technology has motivated people to keep on seeking better and innovative ways to reduce the use of energy as the way to cut cost and to protect the environment. In lighting industry, LED and Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) are preferred to replace the old conventional lights. However, there are many reasons to prefer LED bulbs to CFL bulbs.

CFL is a smaller version of fluorescent bulb designed as a better alternative to replace incandescent lamp. Though smaller it generally gives the same amount of visible light than incandescent lamp with less energy consumption. But like any incandescent lamp, CFL needs mercury to work. CFL is also extremely fragile, not reliable in cold locations, and can’t be recycled.

LED bulbs on the other hand are more reliable and more durable than CFLs. LED bulbs do not contain mercury, making them safer to the environment and household use. Compared to CFL bulbs, LEDs consume much less energy. Their abilities to work at very low voltages and with alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) provide more advantages than CFLs.

In terms of reliability, LED bulbs tend not to have unpredictable failure modes, while CFL bulbs have higher chance of performance failure, such as catching fire and even exploding. With solid state devices, LED bulbs are typically far more robust than CFLs, and unlike CFL bulbs, LED bulbs are able to perform well under cold condition.

Clearly LED bulbs are more superior compared to CFL bulbs. They are more cost efficient due to its lower power consumptions and longer lifespan. LED bulbs are the best options for our lighting needs.
